Discord Moderation Guide

Light Mode

Introduction

Welcome to the Moderation Guide!

Whether you're stepping into moderation for the first time or you're a seasoned staff member, this guide is here to support you. Moderators play a crucial role in shaping a safe, respectful, and engaging community experience for everyone.

Your responsibilities go beyond just enforcing rules — you're also here to assist users, defuse conflicts, and encourage positive interaction. This guide covers everything from essential rules and tools, to conflict resolution strategies and staff conduct. It's your go-to resource for becoming a confident and effective moderator.

Rules & Guidelines

Clear rules keep the community safe and organized. Here are some core rules moderators typically enforce:
  1. Advertising Restrictions:

Users must not advertise without explicit permission or outside designated channels. This includes:
    • Discord invites
    • Referral links
    • Social media profiles
  2. Prohibited Content

Content is not allowed if it:
    • Is illegal or harmful
    • Contains pornography or nudity
    • Includes sexual or suggestive material
    • Encourages violence or harassment
    • Shares personal/confidential info
    • Impersonates others misleadingly
    • Spams or disrupts chat
Violations may result in warnings, temporary mutes, or kicks depending on severity.
  3. Language and Behavior

Insults, defamatory remarks, racism, sexism, or discrimination are strictly prohibited. Always promote respect and inclusivity.
  4. Begging

Asking for free rewards, money, or favors is discouraged. Encourage users to use the community’s legitimate earning or reward systems.
  5. Spam

Repeated messages, rapid-fire text, or excessive mentions disrupt conversations and should be addressed.
Tip: Always explain the reason for a warning or punishment to the user.

Tools & Commands

Moderation is much easier (and more consistent) when you have the right tools. Whether you're handling spam, enforcing rules, or logging actions, here are the basics every mod team should be using:

Where to use commands? Always operate commands in mod/staff channels to keep records organized.

Handling Conflicts

Conflicts happen. Your job is to manage them calmly and fairly:

  1. Stay Calm and Neutral: Don’t take sides or react emotionally.
  2. Listen to All Parties: Understand the full story before acting.
  3. Use Warnings or Timeouts: Often a gentle reminder or timeout is enough to resolve issues.
  4. Escalate Serious Problems: If conflicts persist, involve senior admins or owners.
Tip: Document all actions taken during a conflict for future reference.

Roles & Responsibilities

Extra: Check in with your team regularly and share feedback to improve moderation quality.
